What is Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a simple procedure. In this procedure, some scars, wrinkles and pigmentation are treated. Dermabrasion can be done using one of the following equipments:
1. Manual Dermabraders
2. Motorized Dermabraders
3. Microdermabrasion equipment

A small abrasive wheel or brush rotating at a high speed is used by the doctor to abrade or remove the skin with the wheel. Dermabrasion is a mechanical procedure.

If you have used a sand paper, you will quickly understand what dermabrasion is. Once the old skin is removed, new skin will form in some days. The new skin is without the earlier problems. The healing depends upon the area treated and the depth of the abrasion.

This procedure may also swell your skin for some time, but slowly as the new skin forms, the problems go away and you can begin with your work again. Lets know more about dermabrasion.

The Risk

As is with any surgical treatment, dermabrasion also has some risks specially if there is a laxity in the post operative care.
There may be hyper-pigmentation of the operated part if it is prematurely exposed to sun & dark skin may become discolored and blotchy.

How long to Heal

Immediately after the surgery the skin becomes red and swollen. There may be some pain, burning or tingling sensation. Pain is controlled with analgesics. The swelling subsides in 3 - 5 days, a crust forms over the abraded area and the healing begins.
The crust falls off and exposes the growing epithelium. Local itching is taken care of by topical ointment. It is mandatory to take strict sun protection precautions until the normal pigmentation returns completely, which may take 3-4 months.
