The Truth About Acne

Blackheads

Blackheads, also known as open comedones, are follicles that have a wider than normal opening. They are filled with plugs of sebum and sloughed-off cells and have undergone a chemical reaction resulting in the oxidation of melanin. This gives the material in the follicle the typical black color.

Blackheads are not caused by germs, but are prone to infections when excessively touched or pressed. Interfering with blackheads may lead to severe acne. So blackheads should never be tampered with, using fingernails or needles.

According to Ayurveda, blackheads can be divided into two types, lighter ones (vayanga)and darker ones (nyachcha).
